"No tax on Social Security": what it really means

You've probably heard that Social Security isn't taxed anymore. That isn't what the law did. Here's what actually changed and what didn't.

What didn't change

What's new

What that means for you

If most of your income is Social Security plus a modest pension or IRA withdrawals, the new deduction may wipe out the tax you owed. If you take larger IRA withdrawals or have investment income, you may still owe. The deduction lowers your taxable income. It doesn't make your benefits tax-free.

After losing a spouse: the tax change nobody warns you about

This catches people every year. Your income may stay close to what it was, but your filing status changes, and the tax bill can jump.

The year your spouse dies

You can still file a joint return for that year, as long as you don't remarry before December 31. You get the full married brackets and deductions one last time.

The years after

Starting the next year, most surviving spouses must file as single. There is a special status called qualifying surviving spouse (it used to be called qualifying widow or widower) that keeps the joint-return rates for two more years. But it only applies if you have a child or stepchild you can claim as a dependent who lived with you all year, and you paid more than half the cost of keeping up the home. Most retirees don't have a dependent child at home, so they don't qualify.
